SEL Our SEL focus this week was part 1 of 2, solving problems Students learned: 
  • Calming down helps you think so you can solve problems.
  • Following steps can help you solve problems.
  • Saying the problem without blame is respectful.
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit.  Students will learn:
    • Offspring inherit instructions for each trait from both of their parents.
    • Offspring can inherit different instructions from their parents, so offspring may have different traits.
    • A family tree shows how members of a family are related.
English Language Arts   Next week, we will be focusing on main idea and details as we begin our unit on Chicago. Students will be making main idea and details rainbow cones.

Don't forget to read for 20 min/20 days and record it in the March log.

Spelling  There will NOT be a new spelling list next week. We will be working with prefixes and suffixes.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class We began Unit 6, Geometry. Students will explore the attributes of quadrilaterals. 
  
Practice all of the facts.  A mixed fact quiz will be given on Wednesday, March 18. It is NOT timed!

SEL Our SEL focus this week was managing hurt feelings. Students learned: 
  • Calming down when your feelings have been hurt can help you avoid jumping to conclusions.
  • Thinking of other explanations and getting more information can help you avoid jumping to conclusions.
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit.  Students will read the book The Code, to learn why offspring have similar traits to their parents, but not always with each other.  They will make model clay creatures by using instructions for traits from two parents.


Junior Achievement: Thanks again to Mr. Blocker our Jr. Achievement representative. Students received a Certificate of Achievement. 

English Language Arts   Typed country reports are due on Monday. Please make sure your child reviews the blue country information guide when they are editing. 

Culture week is next week. Students brought home an information sheet on what
it is all about. Please go over the presentation guidelines with your child so that they are prepared to present. Ask your child which day they chose. In a nutshell this is what is expected from each student:

1. Pick any 3 chapters and practice reading them (from your Chromebook).
2. Make something that shows your connection to the country (slide, poster, 
index card, video).
3. Bring in 2 items that represent your country (ie: music, food, instrument, 
pictures, book, souvenirs, etc.).

Students will be graded when they present on:
  • speaking volume
  • speaking clearly
  • eye contact (looks at audience at least 2x when reading each chaper)
  • artifacts brought - must bring 2 showcase items
  • artifacts explained - must explain 2 showcase items
  • share your personal connection to the country

Spelling  New spelling sort went home on Monday. Students had time to complete all 3 spelling activities in class this week. Please check in with your child. They are all due on Friday, March 13, the day of the test.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class Unit 5 Study guides are due Monday. The Unit 5 Assessment will be Tuesday. Please review the study guide with your child prior to Tuesday. Our next Unit is Geometry.

SEL Our SEL focus this week was managing anger.  Students learned: 
  • Everyone feels angry sometimes, but hurting other people’s feelings or bodies is not okay.
  • It’s important to calm down angry feelings so you don’t do something hurtful.
  • Being assertive is a respectful way to get what you want or need.
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. 


Junior Achievement: Mr. Blocker will be here for our final Jr. Achievement session. Students will build a city and receive a Certificate of Achievement. 

English Language Arts   As we continue with our traditions and culture unit, students  
will finish researching and taking notes about their country. Then they will be typing their 
country reports. Those students that do not finish their work during class time will need
to finish at home next week.

*Your child will be presenting their country to the class during the week of March
9th. Look for a letter with the guidelines and the date your child will be
presenting to come home on Monday.

Don't forget to read for 20 min/20 days and record it in the February log. They are due on Monday.

Spelling  A new spelling sort will go home next week.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class Students will be playing a couple of games that will give them more practice with division and then they will be introduced to area. There will be a division checkpoint quiz on Tuesday.

SEL Our SEL focus this week we reviewed the skills for learning:
  • Focus Attention
  • Self Talk
  • Be Assertive
  • Listen
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. Students are learning that organisms can have traits that are similar to their parent's traits, can be like one parent, both parents, or a mix of both of their parents' traits. 


Junior Achievement: Mr. Blocker taught students about being Entrepreneurs and they created restaurants. In our next Jr. Achievement session, students will learn about city and government taxes. 

English Language Arts   As we continue with our traditions and culture unit, students be
introduced to the research paper they will be writing.  It would be great if you could have a conversation with your child over the weekend about countries your family/ancestors immigrated to America from.

Don't forget to read for 20 min/20 days and record it in the February log. They are due on or before March 2.

Spelling  New spelling words went home on Tuesday. Students had time to complete all 3 spelling activities in class this week. Please check in with your child. They are all due on Thursday, Feb. 27, the day of the test.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class   We have been writing multiplication and division story problems in class. Please work with your child at home. There will be a quiz on Monday where the will be given one multiplication equation and one division equation. Students will have to write a story problem for each on the quiz. A review homework sheet went home today.

Practice the x9 facts.  A fact quiz will be given on Wednesday, February 26. It is NOT timed! Students are responsible for mastering the multiplication facts up to 12. The quiz will have about 26 math facts.  Flash cards are a great resource!

SEL Our SEL focus this week was how to handle disappointment. Students learned:  
  • Positive self-talk helps me calm down.
  • Setting a new goal and making a plan to achieve it is a positive way to handle disappointment. 
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. Students will learn that organisms can have traits that are similar to their parent's traits, can be like one parent, both parents, or a mix of both of their parents' traits. 

We are fortunate to have Mr. Blocker as our Junior Achievement volunteer. He will be in our classroom once a week, for five weeks, for 60 minutes. He will be discussing the characteristics of cities and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. In our first session students will identified the different zones used in city planning and apply the information to organize businesses. In session two, students examined the importance of money to a city.

English Language Arts   We will discuss text structures.

Spelling  New spelling words will go home Tuesday.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class   I enjoyed meeting with many of you this week. Thank you for taking the time to discuss your child's progress with me.  As we continue Unit 5, Multiplication, Division & Area, students will continue learning to solve and create multiplication and division story problems, and explore fact families.

  • They can use belly breathing to calm down.
  • Calming down helps you handle accusations
    calmly and thoughtfully.
  • It’s important to take responsibility when you’ve
    made a mistake. 
Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. 

English Language Arts   We will continue with non-fiction text features.
Don't forget to read for 20 min/20 days and record it in the February log.

Spelling  New spelling words went home Monday. Your child should have completed 2 out of the 3 spelling menu activities. Please check in with them. We will work on the 3rd one this week. They are all due on Thursday, February 14, the day of the test.

Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. 

English Language Arts   We will begin a unit on non-fiction text features.
Don't forget to turn in the January Reading Log. February logs went home today.

Spelling  New spelling words will go home Monday.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  We will have the Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions Test on Tuesday, Feb 3. Please make sure your child's study guide is completed this weekend. It is due Monday. Review it with them as it will prepare them for the test on Tuesday.
