Ms. Zurales' Class News

ELA  We will continue reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. As we read the novel, students are completing a packet that addresses multiple reading skills.

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. April Logs went home this week.

PARCC ELA testing will be Monday thru Wednesday. Please make sure your child has their chromebook charged, gets a good night sleep, and eats a healthy breakfast. 

SPELLING  New word sorts went home on Monday. Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Thursday, April 13, which is the day of the test.

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class - will continue with area and perimeter. We will have a mixes quiz on all the multiplication facts thru 12 on Wednesday.  A study guide will go home on Thursday, April 13 for Unit 6. It is due on Wednesday, April 19. The Unit 6 test will be Thursday, April 20th.

Social Studies  The Chicago Quiz #2 will be given on Wednesday. This will NOT be an open note test. It will cover p. 8-12 in the Chicago Packet. Please make sure your child uses the study guide that went home this week.

Ms. Zurales' Class News

ELA  We will continue reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. As we read the novel, students are completing a packet that addresses multiple reading skills.

We will also continue our unit about Chicago. Next, we will discuss The Chicago World Fair. 

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. March Logs are due April 3rd.

SPELLING  New word sorts will go home on Monday, April 3. Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column).

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class - We will have PARCC testing when we get back. When we are not testing, we will continue with area and perimeter.

Important Dates & Announcements

*Spring break week is a good time to replenish any of your child's school supplies. Please ask your child to check their supplies. Many students do not have scissors or headphones.

Ms. Zurales' Class News

ELA  We are reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. As we read the novel, students are completing a packet that addresses multiple reading skills.

We will continue our unit about Chicago. We are making a flip book about the Great Chicago Fire. Next, we will discuss rebuilding the city after the Great Chicago Fire. 

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. March Logs are due April 3rd.

SPELLING  Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Thursday, March 23, which is also the date of the test. Due to our field trip, our test will be on Thursday.

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class - students will write quadrilateral riddles, and then investigate perimeter and area as a way to measure polygons. The practice sheet for the 12's multiplication facts will go home on Monday.  A 12's quiz will be given on Thursday, March 23rd.

SCIENCE  The Unit Test will be on Tuesday, March 21. This is NOT an open book test. Students should use the study guide, quizzes and quick study worksheets to prepare for the test.

*Just a reminder:  we will be going to the Shedd Aquarium on Friday. Please send your child with a disposable lunch that day! Also, we will be doing a lot of walking so make sure they are wearing comfortable shoes.

Ms. Zurales' Class News

ELA  We are beginning our final ELA unit which will focus on "standing up for what you believe in." We will read the novel The One and Only Ivan. It will be used as our anchor text

Leprechaun traps are due on Thursday, March 16th. Students should fill out the Leprechaun planning page in Google Classroom or the paper planning sheet by March 16th as well. I look forward to seeing the students' traps.

We will continue learning about Chicago. We will discuss the Industrial Boom and the Great Chicago Fire. Students will be making a flip book about the Great Chicago Fire. 

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. 

SPELLING   We had a test today. Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Friday, March 24, which is also the date of the test. 

For trimester 3 each spelling activity will be worth one point instead of two. A greater emphasis of the third trimester ELA grade will be placed on reading comprehension and writing while still including points geared towards spelling.

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class - students will build their understanding of polygons. There will be a checkpoint quiz on polygons and quadrilaterals on 3/17. The practice sheet for the 11's multiplication facts will go home on Monday.  A 11's quiz will be given on Friday, March 17.

SCIENCE  We will wrap up Chapter 10, by researching a planet with a partner. The Unit Test will be on Tuesday, March 21. Look for the study guide to come home this week.

Ms. Zurales' Class News
We began a great week in third grade with an in-school field trip on Tuesday about matter. A scientist from High Touch, High Tech came in and taught us all about the three states of matter.

ELA  I've really enjoyed the Culture Day presentations. Next week students will finish presenting. We will also begin a unit on Chicago. During this time, students will be working on answering test dependent questions. This week, we will be learning about the Chicago Flag. Students will continue with Daily 4 stations. Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. February reading logs are due on March 1st.

SPELLING  A spelling test was given today. New words will go home on Monday. Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Friday, March 10th, which is also the date of the test. 

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class will finish up Unit 5. Students will solve story problems that involve adding two areas. The study guide is due on Tuesday. Please make sure to check over it with your child. The Unit test will be on Wednesday. A practice sheet will go home on Monday for the 8's multiplication facts. A 8's quiz will be given on Friday, March 3rd.

Science We will be learning about the phases of the moon and eclipses

SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Blocker, from Junior Achievement, discussed the role of an entrepreneur. Students explored the process involved in starting one type of business:  a restaurant. They learned how businesses promote a healthy economy within a city.

Ms. Zurales' Class News
ELA  We continue our unit Culture and Traditions.  We’ll be starting on our “Culture Day” activity this week.  A letter and other information will be coming home Wednesday.  Students will be required to put together a presentation.

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. 

SPELLING  A spelling test was given today. Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Friday, February 24, which is also the date of the test. 

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class will continue Multiplication, Division & Area. Students will investigate two different interpretations of division-sharing and grouping-by solving story problems that elicit one interpretation or the other. They will share and discuss their work in class.  A practice sheet will go home on Monday for the 6's multiplication facts. A 6's quiz will be given on Thursday.

SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Blocker, from Junior Achievement, will have students examine the importance of money to a city and how people use different methods to pay for goods and services.

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day. If your child would like to send in valentines, please make sure they do NOT address the envelopes. We have 21 students in our class.

Thank in advance to all of our Valentine's Day party planners and food and drink volunteers. We can't wait for Tuesday.

Ms. Zurales' Class News
ELA  We completed all 4 lessons about immigration. The study guide for the immigration unit went home today. It should be completed and returned on Monday. The chapter test will be on Wednesday. Students should be reviewing their book, notes, open book quizzes and study guide. Students will NOT be able to use their books/notes.

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. February logs went home on Wednesday.

SPELLING  Homework (3 items on the menu, 1 from each column) is due on Friday, February 10, which is also the date of the test. 

MATH Ms. Zurales' math class will continue Multiplication, Division & Area. We are solving and writing multiplication and division story problems. There will be a multiplication and division checkpoint quiz on Thursday. A practice sheet will go home on Monday for the 4's multiplication facts. A 4's quiz will be given on Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES  We are fortunate to have Mr. Blocker as our Junior Achievement volunteer. He will be in our classroom once a week, for five weeks, for 50 minutes. He will be discussing the characteristics of cities and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. In our first session students identified the different zones used in city planning and applied the information to organize businesses. Next week, in session two, students will examine the importance of money to a city and how people use different methods to pay for goods and services.
