ELA  Culture week is next week. Students should practice reading their report out loud. Please go over the guidelines with your child so that they are prepared to present on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Ask your child which day they chose.

The February Reading Log is due on or before Thursday, March 1.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on or before Thursday, Mar 1, the day of the test.  If students are using their time wisely, they will be able to complete all 3 activities during centers.

SOCIAL SCIENCE Social Studies:  We are fortunate to have Mr. Blocker as our Junior Achievement volunteer. He will be in our classroom once a week, for five weeks, for 50 minutes. He will be discussing the characteristics of cities and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. In our first session students identified the different zones used in city planning and applied the information to organize businesses. In session two, students examined the importance of money to a city. In session three, students learned how people earn income to pay for the goods and services sold in a city. Next week, students manage a personal bank account as if they were working and living in a city.

We will also begin a unit on Chicago. During this time, students will be working on answering text dependent questions. In the upcoming week, we will be learning about the Chicago Flag.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' math class:  Next week we will begin Unit 6, Geometry. A pre-test for Unit 6 will be given on Monday.  Our next Multiplication fact quiz on the 8's will be Wednesday.

If your child should forget their Student Book or their Home Connections workbook at school, they can go into my google math classroom from a home computer and print the page they will need to complete for homework.

We have made the decision as a 3rd grade team not to generally administer the Winter MAP test to our students.  At this time, we felt that the time away from instruction to take this test was not worth the results we would get.  We have not made any decisions about the Spring MAP test.  For Winter data review we continue to use Fountas and Pinnell Reading Leveling (Benchmarking next week) and our Common ELA and Math assessments that the students have taken on line which directly assess the standards we are teaching in our curriculum.  If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to your homeroom teacher.

Thanks!

Some good winter weather rules for PV: Here’s a quick note about recess: Children NEED boots to be in snow- snow pants are not required, but kids should know that if they get their clothes wet, they will be wet for the afternoon.... Snow/ice is not to be thrown for any reason at all. They may roll it, or build with it, but not launch it, etc.
