Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
February 1, 2019

ELA  We’ll continue learning about immigration and culture. We will read Lesson 4: Life in America. There will be a short open book quiz on Thursday. There will be a Chapter test over all 4 lessons. It will NOT be open book. Students should study their Lesson Reviews, Open Book Quizzes and the study guide which we will fill out in class. I will have a better idea when the test will be after this week.

February Reading Logs went home today. Make sure to read for 20days/20 minutes per night.

SPELLING  New sorts will go home on Tuesday. Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, Feb. 14, the day of the test.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. In Chapter 4:  Why does the train float, even though gravity is acting on it? students will examine how 2 forces can be exerted on an object a the same time.

Social Studies:  We are fortunate to have Mr. Blocker as our Junior Achievement volunteer. He will be in our classroom once a week, for five weeks, for 50 minutes. He will be discussing the characteristics of cities and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. In our first session students will identify the different zones used in city planning and apply the information to organize businesses. 


MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class is working in Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions. Our focus will be on fractions this week. Students will compare and order fractions. The study guide went home today and is due on Thursday, Feb. 7. The Unit 4 test is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 7s. This quiz will be on Thursday.

ELA  We’ll continue learning about immigration and culture. We read about ethnic neighborhoods in Lesson 2 and completed an open book quiz. Next week, we will read Lesson 3, about people who come from all of the world to the U.S. and Lesson 4: Life in America. Each lesson will be followed by a short open book quiz.



Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the January log. It is due on or before Friday February 1.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Feb 1, the day of the test

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. Students will reflect on their learning about forces by making digital diagrams. They will be applying their understanding of gravity and other forces. There will be a short written reflection on Chapter 3. Next, in Chapter 4:  Why does the train float, even though gravity is acting on it? students will examine how 2 forces can be exerted on an object a the same time.

January 18, 2019

ELA  We’ll be learning about immigration and culture. Students will listen to a read aloud, Matchbox Diaries. It is an immigration tale. Later in the week, we will be begin a unit about people moving from place to place. Our first lesson is about moving to a new community.  There will be short, open book, open notes, graded reviews. These will occur after each section/lesson in the unit.


Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the January log.

SPELLING  New spelling sorts will go home Tuesday. Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Feb 1, the day of the test

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. Students are reading about gravity and observing forces in chain reactions. 

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class is working in Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions. Students will be working on measurement story problems and unit fractions. There will be a quiz on Friday over measurement. Students will be given an item and they will have to decide what measurement (mass, volume, length) to use and what unit of measurement (ie: grams, kilograms, milliliters, meters) to use. Please review measurement with them.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 4s. This quiz will be Wednesday.

ELA  We will continue our study of cultures and traditions. Students will be continue writing their argumentative piece on why they think the animal teeth they chose are the best to have. 


January Reading Logs went home this week. Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the January log.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on January 18, the day of the test

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. 

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class is working in Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions. Please review telling time with your child. There will be quiz on Time on Wednesday.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 3s. This quiz will be Wednesday.

IMPORTANT DATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS


On Wednesday, we will be going to the Shedd Aquarium. Please send your child with a brown bag, throw away lunch, with their name clearly marked on the outside of the bag. These will be carried by our chaperones and then thrown away after our lunch time. 

Also, please make sure they are wearing comfortable shoes.  


Also, no money is necessary.  There will be no time for shopping in the gift shop.  We also ask that student cameras and cell phones stay at home.

December 21, 2018

ELA  We will continue our study of cultures and traditions. We will be reading What If I Had Animal Teeth. Students will be choosing animal teeth and then writing an argumentative piece on why they think the animal teeth they chose are the best to have. We will also be writing about a New Year's Resolution.  


Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the December Reading Log. Logs are due January 7.

SPELLING  Menus will go home when we return on January 7th. 

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. We will continue Chapter 2. Students will read a short fictional story about 2 sisters discussing and investigating magnets. This lesson reinforces concepts about magnets and provides the opportunity to make sense of a data table.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class will begin Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 10s. This quiz will be after the break. It's never too early to start practicing. Flash cards are a great resource!

ELA  We will read Twas the Night Before Christmas and illustrate what the author wants his readers to visualize in their heads.


December Reading Logs went home this week. Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the December Reading Log. Logs are due January 7.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, Dec 20th, the day of the test. 

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. We will continue Chapter 2. Students will be reading a reference book about how magnets attract and repel and write a reflection. 

MATH  A study guide for Unit 2 is due on Monday, December 17. Please review it with your child. The Unit Assessment is Wednesday, December 19.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 10s. This quiz will be after the break. It's never too early to start practicing. Flash cards are a great resource!

December 7, 2018

ELA  We will begin a new unit on Cultures and Traditions. Students will be answering the question:  How does learning about other cultures impact our thinking? We will be reading the book Hello. This book identifies different languages and ways to say hello. We will also read The Keeping Quilt. This is a story about the importance of keeping family history and traditions through time. We will be designing a quilt next week describing our own family tradition. Students should be thinking about a family tradition they celebrate and be able to elaborate on it for Thursday. 


December Reading Logs went home this week. Make sure to read for 20 days (20 min each day) and record it in the December Reading Log.

SPELLING  New sorts went home on Monday.  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, Dec 20th, the day of the test. 

SOCIAL SCIENCE  We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. We will continue Chapter 2:  Why  does the train rise without anything touching it? Students will predict and test what objects magnetic forces act on.

MATH  Students will be identifying and labeling types of multiplication facts in a multiplication table. A study guide for Unit 2 will go home on Wednesday. It will be due on Monday, December 17. The Unit Assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, December 19.

We will also be working to master our multiplication facts.  We will begin with the 2's.  A practice sheet will go home on Monday and a fact test will be given on Wednesday. Students are responsible for mastering the multiplication facts up to 12. The quiz will have 26 math problems. It's never too early to start practicing. Flash cards are a great resource!
