Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
March 22, 2019

ELA/SOCIALSCIENCE  We continue our unit on Chicago. During this time, students are working on answering text dependent questions. Next, we will be learning about Chicago's early history.


Don't forget to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and record it for March. Logs are due April 1.



SPELLING  New sorts will go home on Monday, April 1. Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Friday, April 14, the day of the test.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: We will be making fraction pizzas when we return. The balance of the week, students will be testing- IAR, Illinois Assessment of Readiness (State Assessment, replaces PARCC) 

There will be a quiz on dividing by 5s on Tuesday, April 2.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
March 15, 2019

ELA/SOCIALSCIENCE  We will finish the culture presentations on Monday. 
Also, we will dive deeper into our unit on Chicago. During this time, students will be working on answering text dependent questions. In the upcoming week, we will be learning about the Chicago Flag.


We will finish our Chicago main idea and details rainbow cones.

Don't forget to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and record it for March.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: We will take a pretest for Unit 6, Geometry. Students will also take the common assessment for the concepts they have learned thus far. Due to the Chicago Field Trip, math will be light next week.

We will start the division facts quiz on Wednesday. This quiz will be on dividing by 2s. The following week, we will test over dividing by 5s.

IMPORTANT DATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS


On Thursday, we will be going to the Chicago Historical Museum. Please send your child with a brown bag, throw away lunch, with their name clearly marked on the outside of the bag. Teachers will be carrying these and then thrown away after our lunch time. 

Also, please make sure they are wearing comfortable shoes.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
March 8, 2019

ELA  Culture week is next week. Students should practice reading their report out loud. Please go over the guidelines with your child so that they are prepared to present. Ask your child which day they chose. Here is what is expected of them:

1. Pick any 3 chapters and practice reading them.
2. Make something that shows your connection to the country (slide, poster, 
index card, video).
3. Bring in 2 items that represent your country (ie: music, food, instrument, 
pictures, book, souvenirs, etc.)

We will also continue main idea and details.

SPELLING  We will continue working on prefixes and suffixes. There will be an assessment on Friday. A study guide will go home on Monday.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Social Studies: Mr. Blocker will be here for our final Jr. Achievement session. Students will build a city and receive a Certificate of Achievement. 

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: We will finish Unit 5, Multiplication and Division with a unit assessment on Thursday, March 14. A study guide went home Thursday. It is due on Wednesday. Please make sure to review it with your child. 

Our next Multiplication facts quiz will be a mix of all facts. This quiz will be on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
March 1, 2019

ELA  Country reports are due on Monday. Please make sure your child reviews their rubric and country information guide when they are editing. Next week, we will be focusing on main idea and details. 


Culture week is coming up. Students brought home an information sheet on what
it is all about. The day they are expected to present can be found on the
sheet. In a nut shell, this is what is expected from each student:

1. Pick any 3 chapters and practice reading them.
2. Make something that shows your connection to the country (slide, poster,

3. Bring in 2 items that represent your country (ie: music, food, instrument, 
pictures, book, souvenirs, etc.)

February Logs are due on March 4.

SPELLING  We will be taking a break from spelling this week. We will be working on prefixes and suffixes.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We finished our unit on Balancing Forces with  written scientific explanation on why the train changes from falling to floating.

Social Studies: Mr Blocker will be back for our fourth Jr. Achievement session. Students will learn about city and government taxes. 

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: students will be playing a couple of games that will give them more practice with division and then they will be introduced to area. There will be a division checkpoint quiz on area on Wednesday.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 12s. This quiz will be on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
February 22, 2019

ELA  Students will be typing their reports. We will also be learning about text
features by looking at non-fiction texts.

Don't forget to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and log it. February Logs are due on or before March 4.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, February 28, which is the day of the test.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will finish our unit on Balancing Forces.  Students will write a scientific explanation on why the train changes from falling to floating.

Social Studies: Mr Blocker will be back for our third Jr. Achievement session. He will teach students about being Entrepreneurs and they will create restaurants.


MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: students will play a game to help them practice solving multiplication and division problems,  take a multiplication and division checkpoint quiz on Tuesday, and work with sharing and grouping to solve division story problems.  

We have been writing multiplication and division story problems in class. Please work with them at home. They will be given one multiplication equation and one division equation, and they have to write a story problem for each on the quiz.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 11s. This quiz will be on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: I enjoyed meeting many of you this week. Thank you for taking the time to discuss your child's progress with me.  As we continue Unit 5, Multiplication, Division & Area, students will solve and create multiplication and division story problems, and explore fact families.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 9s. This quiz will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.

ELA  As we continue with our culture unit, I will introduce the students to the research paper they will be writing.  It would be great if you could have a conversation with your child over the weekend about countries your family/ancestors immigrated to America from.

There will be a Chapter test over all 4 lessons on Wednesday, Feb. 13. It will NOT be open book. Students should study their Lesson Reviews, Open Book Quizzes and the study guide.

Don't forget to read for 20days/20 minutes per night and log it.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, Feb. 14, which is the day of the test.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces.  We will finish Chapter 4:  Why does the train float, even though gravity is acting on it? students will read the text Explaining a Bridge, which provides another context for applying ideas about balanced forces. They will also create physical models and discuss why the train floats. 

Social Studies:  Mr. Blocker, our Junior Achievement volunteer will be back. 
In session two, students examine the importance of money to a city.

We are making an immigration scrapbook. We will be writing a response to a scenario as if we were an immigrant.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class will begin Unit 5, Multiplication, Division & Area next week.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 8s. This quiz will be on Wednesday.
