Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
March 25, 2016

ELA  We are reading The One and Only Ivan, in class. We will continue completing activities throughout the coming weeks that go along with this book.  March Reading Logs are due on Monday, April 4. 

Spelling  Students will receive new words on Monday when we return. They are to complete 6 activities at the end of the 2 week period. Please make sure you initial the box on the menu that the work has been completed. Homework will be due on the test day, Friday, April 15th.

Math When we return, we will finish up Unit 6, Geometry. We will be working with perimeter problems and fractions on geoboards. A study guide will go home on Monday, April 4 for Unit 6. It is due on Thursday. Please make sure your child completes all the problems. We will go over it and review for the test on Thursday. The Unit 6 test will be on Friday, April 8.



Social Studies We will continue our study on The Chicago Fire, rebuilding the city.

PE Parent Helpers Needed:
Mrs. Cushing is looking for parent helpers for her tennis unit.  This would involve tossing tennis balls to students.  If you are willing and able to help at all during the month of April, please contact Mrs. Cushing at tcushing@ccsd66.org

ELA  We are reading The One and Only Ivan, in class. We will continue completing activities throughout the coming weeks that go along with this book. Book reports are due on Thursday. Our languages lessons will focus on pronouns and antecedents.


Spelling  Students should be sorting their words every night. They are to complete 6 activities at the end of the 2 week period. Please make sure you initial the box on the menu that the work has been completed. Homework will be due on the test day, Thursday, March 24.

Math Next week student will be investigating perimeter and area. There will be a X7 multiplication test on Thursday.

Social Studies We will continue our study on Chicago. Our next focus will be on The Chicago Fire. We will also design a brochure about Chicago.

ELA The students did an awesome job presenting their cultures! We learned so much! We began reading The One and Only Ivan, together in class. We will be completing activities throughout the coming weeks that go along with this book. Our languages lessons will focus on the pronouns I and Me, and possessive pronouns.


Spelling  An assessment was given today. A new sort will go home on Monday. Students should be sorting their words every night. They are to complete 6 activities at the end of the 2 week period. Please make sure you initial the box on the menu that the work has been completed. Homework will be due on the test day, Thursday, March 24.

Math Next week student will be working with quadrilaterals and their attributes. There will be a checkpoint quiz on polygons and quadrilaterals on Wednesday.

Social Studies We will continue our study on Chicago. There will be a test over pages 1-8 in the Chicago packet on Wednesday.  A study guide also went home today. Our next focus will be on Chicago Waterways.

March 4, 2016

ELA Students will be presenting their Cultural Day projects beginning Monday. Please make sure to help them complete this. Check their Presentation Expectations page for the exact date of their presentation. With the start of the Third trimester next week, we will begin our final reading unit "Stand Up For What You Believe In!" We will be reading The One and Only Ivan, together in class.

Math Next week student will be working with tangrams. They will be taking a look at congruence and similarity. Students will use tangram pieces to begin solving a series of geometric puzzles. We will have a X4 test on Friday.

Social Studies We will continue our study on Chicago. We will focus on the founding of Chicago. 

Important Announcements

Mrs. Cushing, the PE teacher, is looking for some help with her  indoor tennis unit come April.  Parents can just come in for their child's 25 min. PE class or come for the grade level time.  Students need help getting the fundamentals down.  Students would benefit from having extra people to help toss balls to them so they can practice their skills.  Please let her know if you are available at all to help out.  Please email Mrs. Cushing at tcushing@ccsd66.org  Thank you!

ELA To culminate our ELA and Social Science Units on Storytelling: Culture and Traditions, the students will take part in an independent study projects that incorporates not only our textual learning, but also their technology and presentation skills. Each student will be asked to select a country that they have family ancestry or a personal connection. Please help your child with this. They are to come to school on Wednesday with the country they want to research. Please look for the Culture Day Presentation Guidelines that will be coming home on Monday. Thank you for your help!

ELA We will continue reading Matchbox Diary by Paul Fleischman. Our focus will be on text dependent questions. 

Spelling  Students should be sorting their words every night. They are to complete 6 activities at the end of the 2 week period. Please make sure you initial the box on the menu that the work has been completed. The next due date for homework is Feb 26th.  The test will also take place then.

Math Our Unit 5 Assessment on Multiplication and Division will be Thursday. A study guide and answer key will come home on Monday. It is due on Wednesday. We will have a X5 test on Friday. Next we will move to Unit 6, Geometry.

Social Studies We will be learning about people moving from place to place. We will discuss why people leave communities behind, but bring their memories and cultures to new communities they join. This will lead into a cultural day project that will be discussed the following week.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
February 11, 2016
ELA We will be reading Matchbox Diary by Paul Fleischman. Our focus will be on text dependent questions. Students will have a homework assignment to bring in objects. Check your child's assignment notebook next week for more information.

During the month of February, students are reading a fiction book and completing a book report. 

We will continue our pen pal project with third graders in Dubai, thanks to Miss Wyse. We are writing letters on the chromebook with information on our American culture. We are learning how they celebrate the various cultures in the Middle East. 


Spelling  Students should be sorting their words every night. They are to complete 6 activities at the end of the 2 week period. Please make sure you initial the box on the menu that the work has been completed. The next due date for homework is Feb 26th.  The test will also take place then.

Math We will continue working with multiplication and division and area. We will focus on division. There will be checkpoint quiz on division on Thursday. We took a quiz on the X2 multiplication facts. Next week Friday, students should be ready for X3s.

Social Studies We we are learning about What is Chicago? Its flag and what it means. We will also learn about Chicagoland and its neighborhoods.

Thank you to our Valentine party helpers Mrs. Wawro, Mrs. Rossi, Mrs. Staehely, and Mrs. Silanskis. The kids had a wonderful time! Thanks to those families that sent in treats and drinks: The Heck's, The Koniecko's, and the Sarno's. I hope you all have a happy Valentine's Day!
