Reading  After break we will focus on fables.  We will read aloud fables from More Fables of Aesop by Jack Kent.  Students will use the comprehension strategies of understanding fables and predict/infer to identify elements of a fable.
Language Arts Students will be revising stringy sentences and reading and writing words with final /k/ spelled k and ck.

Reading Logs  Second graders are expected to read 20 minutes each night.  Please continue to log minutes with your child in their December reading log. December Reading Logs are due Monday, January 6th.


Math After break we will continue 2-digit subtraction. Students will model and record 2 digit subtraction, and use regrouping to subtract and find the difference. 

Flash Cards  Students should be practicing their addition facts with their flash cards and Rocket Math fact sheets. Weekly timed tests are given.

Social Studies:  Junior Achievement  Mrs. Haiduc, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class this week to teach us about unit and assembly production. We compared unit and assembly-line production methods by making "donuts". Ask your child all about it. Next time we will learn about the economic role of government in a community.

Science  We will begin a unit on Living Things. Students will describe characteristics that distinguish living and nonliving things. They will sort objects to determine whether they are living or nonliving.

Reading and Social Studies
Next week we will be completing a unit on Holidays Around the World. The students will be "traveling" to China, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Poland and Sweden to learn about the holidays and traditions that these countries celebrate this time of year.

Reading Logs  Second graders are expected to read 20 minutes each night.  Please continue to log minutes with your child in their December reading log. 

Spelling Next week we will not have a spelling test.

Math We will begin the next chapter on exploring 2-digit subtraction. Students will count back to subtract multiples of 10, and use regrouping to subtract and find the difference.

Flash Cards  Students should be practicing their addition facts with their flash cards and Rocket Math fact sheets. Weekly timed tests are given.

Science  We had 2 visitor from Willowbrook Wildlife. They talked to the students about owls. We learned about what they look like, how they live, what they eat and where they live. They brought a real Screech Owl and a Great Horned Owl for us to see! In our classroom we also got to dissect an owl pellet. Ask your child about it! Next week we will finish up the unit on owls with a written report.

Reading and Language Arts

Next week we will read aloud I Wanna Iguana, by Karen Kaufman Orloff.  It is about a boy that tries to convince his mom to let him have an iguana. We will discuss the meaning of persuasion and go through the steps of writing a persuasive essay together. Then the students will write their own persuasive essays. 

Reading Logs  Second graders are expected to read 20 minutes each night.  Please continue to log minutes with your child in their December reading log. 

Congratulations to those students who read for 21 days during the month of November. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, popsicles and a Magic School Bus Movie. A coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut was also handed out. 

Spelling Look for your child's word sort to come home on Monday. Please keep the Weekly Spelling Activity Card in your child's green folder when they have completed the nightly activity. Students are being asked to choose a different activity from the Weekly Spelling Activity Card to complete each night (Mon-Thurs) to help them master their spelling words for the week. Once your child has completed the activity, please fill out the spelling homework sheet, indicating which activity they chose, initial it, and have them return it the following day. This will help them prepare for the assessment on Friday. 

Math We will continue with 2-Digit Addition. Students will solve problems by using a table, and apply place value concepts when using a break-apart strategy for 2-digit addition. We will review and have a chapter test next week. Check your child's assignment notebook for the exact date.

Social Studies We are finishing the unit Our Country Long Ago. We'll review and take a chapter test next week. Look for a study guide to come home prior to the test.

Junior Achievement  Mrs. Haiduc, an employee from Opportunity International and a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today to teach us about Our Community.  This is a five week program. Today we learned how a community works. We identified businesses and related jobs in a community. We discussed the terms volunteer, business and citizen and how they are important to our community. 

Science  We finished the chapter on motion with a test on Thursday. Next week week we will be studying owls. Students will learn about their habitats, diet, calls and their place in our environment. Students will complete an investigation and dissect an owl pellet.

Reading and Language Arts

We will discuss "The First Thanksgiving" and do Thanksgiving activities. 

Reading Logs  Second graders are expected to read 20 minutes each night.  Please continue to log minutes with your child.  November Reading logs are due Monday, December 2nd.

Six Flags Read to Succeed  Don't forget to log minutes for Six Flags. Every student who completes six hours or 360 minutes of reading before February 24 will receive a free admission ticket valid at participating Six Flags Theme Parks. Please make sure to initial each entry and sign the reading log to verify that the six hours have been completed. 

Spelling Next week we will not have a spelling test.

Math Our next chapter will continue with 2-Digit Addition. Students will practice 2-digit addition with and without regrouping.

Science  We will continue the chapter on motion. Students will investigate how to move objects, classify moves as pushes or pulls, and know that the amount and direction of the force exerted on an object determines how much and in what direction the object will move.

Social Studies Our next lesson is Thirteen Colonies, One Country. We will discuss the significance of national celebrations and learn about the causes and effects of the American Revolution.

Next week we will read aloud The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau by Jon Agee.  It is about Felix Clousseau and his unusual paintings. We will also read aloud The Ghost-Eye Tree by Bill Martin Jr. and Johh Archambault. It is about a brother and sister who are fearful of a tree they pass on their way to get a pail of milk on a dark, windy night.

Science  We are beginning a chapter on Motion. Students will investigate the ways a ball can move. They will understand that things move at different speeds and discover that objects exhibit different kinds of motion (straight, circular, back and forth).

Social Studies We began the unit Our Country Long Ago. Next week students will learn about the first European settlements in North America: St. Augustine, Jamestown, and Plymouth. We will also begin learning about the origins of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Science  We are learning what causes sound and how sound is made. We did an investigation on how sound is made. Ask your child about it. 

Social Studies We will begin the unit Our Country Long Ago. Students will learn about the beginning and growth of our country. They will be introduced to the Native American groups, early settlers who came from Europe, and explorers who led the way for westward expansion. Next week we will be learning about the ways of life of three Native American groups.

Next week we will read aloud Erandi's Braids by Antonio Hernandez Madrigal.  It is about a girl, Erandi, who hopes for a new dress for her birthday. But when her mother finds holes in the fishing net, Erandi wonders how they will get the money for the things they need.

Congratulations to all the readers. Today we celebrated 21 days of reading for the month of October with lunch in the classroom. We watched the movie The Magic School Bus Getting Energized.

Writing  In writing next week students will continue writing silly animal stories. We will continue building our writing community where students are listening respectfully to the thinking of others and sharing their own writing as well as working in a responsible way.

Science  We will continue learning about heat. Students will explain the transfer of heat and how heat is measured. 

This week a fire fighter from the Darien-Woodridge Fire District came to talk to us about Fire Safety. We learned how important it is to have a home escape plan and a meeting place if a fire should occur. Please discuss this with your child.

Science  We will discuss "What is heat?" Students will measure temperature, and identify heat sources.

This week we will read aloud The Paperboy by Dave Pilkey. It is about a paperboy and his dog enjoying the quiet of the early morning as they deliver their papers.

Reading Logs  Second graders are expected to read 20 minutes each night. Please help your child record their minutes in their October reading folder. Reading log folders should be returned to school at the end of the month after reading for 21 days. 

Writing  In writing next week we will continue the lesson that focused on the read aloud Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Typed Aloud. Also, they will be reading My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman. It is a silly story about a little sister who eats many gross things. It begins with a silly sentence and just keeps getting sillier and sillier.

The focus will be:  students will hear and discuss good writing, write sentences to generate writing ideas, write silly stories, capitalize proper nouns, and approximate the spelling of unfamiliar words. We will continue building our writing community where students are listening respectfully to the thinking of others and sharing their own writing as well as working in a responsible way. Students will express interest in and appreciation for one another's writing.  

Spelling Look for your child's word sort to come home on Monday. Please keep the Weekly Spelling Activity Card in your child's green folder when they have completed the nightly activity. Students are being asked to choose a different activity from the Weekly Spelling Activity Card to complete each night (Mon-Thurs) to help them master their spelling words for the week. Once your child has completed the activity, please fill out the spelling homework sheet, indicating which activity they chose, initial it, and have them return it the following day. This will help them prepare for the assessment on Friday. 

Math Students will problem solve making reasonable estimates and then have a chapter test in the middle of the week. Check your student's assignment notebook for the exact date. Our next chapter is Number Concepts and Patterns. Students will use ordinal numbers to identify positions and compare numbers using <, > and =.

Flash Cards  Students should be practicing their addition facts with their flash cards. Weekly timed tests are given.

Science  We will continue our unit on Energy and Motion. We will continue an investigation on how light moves.

When she is at home she likes to read too. When she grows up she would like to be a veterinarian. Chloe is a star because she is nice. Thanks for sharing Chloe!
