Reading We will be doing a close read on the article Little Free Libraries Bring People Together. Students will be able to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of key details in an informational text.


Reading Logs Reading logs are due on Monday, February 2. Please continue to read and help your child record minutes in their reading log. Don't forget to record minutes in your Six Flags Log too. 

Language Arts 

Grammar  Lessons will focus on adverbs.

Spelling  An assessment was given today. New spelling words will go home on Monday. Please keep them in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used throughout the following 2 weeks.

Math  An assessment was given on Thursday. Our next topic is Three-Digit Addition and Subtraction. Students will explore different strategies for adding three-digit numbers. We will begin with mental math without regrouping. Then they will learn to estimate the sums of three-digit numbers. By the end of the week students will be using place value blocks to add 2 three-digit numbers with regrouping. 

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily. The Math flash cards that you purchased should be used to practice math facts as well as the one minute math practice worksheets that are brought home. Weekly timed tests are given.

Science  Students will draw conclusions on how light moves.

Peyton

Star Student of the Week Peyton was our star student of the week. When she is at school she likes math. When she is at home she likes to play games. Peyton is a star because she is fun to be with. When she grows up she would like to be a baker. Thanks for sharing Peyton!

Reading Students will compare and contrast 2 texts on the same topic, Officer Buckle and Gloria and Aero and Officer Mike. They will write an opinion piece to answer the question: Which dog do you like better? They will cite evidence from the text to support their opinion.

Spelling   New spelling words went home on Tuesday. Please keep them in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used next week. An assessment will be given on Friday.

Math We are working with Place Value to 1,000. Next week students will learn how to: use patterns on a number line to find numbers that come next, compare three-digit numbers, and use number patterns to solve problems. An assessment will be given towards the end of the week.

Oscar

Star Student of the Week Oscar was our star student of the week. When he is at school he likes to learn. When he is at home he likes to play soccer. Oscar is a star because he is cool. When he grows up he would like to be a soccer player. Thanks for sharing Oscar!

Reading  We will be reading a nonfiction story called Aero and Mike, by Joan Plummer Russell.  It is a story about a partnership between a policeman, Officer Mike, and his partner, a police dog named Aero. The reading strategy will focus on author's purpose.

Math  An assessment on Topic 9 was given on Thursday. We began Topic 10, Place Value to 1,000. Next week students will count by hundreds to 1,000, use place value models to show numbers to 1,000, and will add and subtract multiples of 10 or 100 to and from a three digit number without regrouping.

Science  Students were given a toy car, clay, tooth picks and paper and asked to build a sail. They tested their models and observed what made the car move. Students concluded that energy from wind moved the car. Next week we will look at how energy can move and change things in the classroom.

Social Studies  This week we read about Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream and how he helped mold a brighter present day. Students were asked what their dreams were for their community, their country and the world. They shared these dreams in a project that is displayed in the classroom.

Emilija

Star Student of the Week Emilija was our star student of the week. When she is at school she enjoys recess, math, art, music and reading. When she is at home she like to play with her dolls and her kitten. Emilija is a star because she likes to sing and dance. When she grows up she would like to be a singer. Thanks for sharing Emilija!

Reading  We will continue working with the reading strategy asking and answering questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.


Reading Logs  January reading logs went home on Monday. Please continue to read and help your child record minutes in their reading log. Don't forget to record minutes in your Six Flags Log too. 

We had our December READING CELEBRATION on Tuesday. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video and freeze pops. Students were also given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Way to go readers!!

Math  This week we continued to focus on subtracting two-digit numbers. We used subtraction frames, paper and pencil, and a number line to subtract two-digit numbers. Next week we will use addition to check subtraction, use different methods to subtract two-digit problems, and solve two-question story problems. An assessment will be given at the end of the week.
