Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. Students will identify organisms that are closely related as they first listen to and sort bird sounds and later match bears by their traits. They will develop an understanding of the concept of a species while  observing similarities and variation within the traits of a species.

Spelling  New words will go home on Monday, January 6, the day we return from winter break.

English Language Arts  We will continue our study of cultures and traditions. Students  will be reading What If I Had Animal Teeth. They will be choosing animal teeth and then writing an argumentative piece on why they think the animal teeth they chose are the best to have. We will also be writing about a New Year's Resolution.  

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes/20 days. December reading logs are due Monday, January 6, when we return.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  We will begin Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions.

Keep practicing those multiplication facts.  After break we will be working with the 2's.  A practice sheet went home today. A fact quiz will be given on Wednesday, January 8. It is NOT timed! Students are responsible for mastering the multiplication facts up to 12. The quiz will have about 26 math facts.  Flash cards are a great resource! 

If your child should forget their Student Book or their Home Connections workbook at school, they can go into my google math classroom from a home computer and print the page they will need to complete for homework.

SEL Our SEL focus this week was making friends.  Students learned that knowing how to begin a conversation, keep it going, and end it in a friendly way helps them get along better with others. Also, focusing attention on and listening to others help them keep a conversation going.

Social Science We will continue our inheritance and traits unit. Students will make observations of various organisms and record the way in which their traits are similar or different.

Spelling We had our test today. New words will not go home until after the winter break.

English Language Arts   Students that did not finish typing their family tradition in class will have to finish it this weekend. It is due Monday. Their illustrated quilt piece describing their own family tradition is also due Monday. 

We will read Twas the Night Before Christmas and illustrate what the author wants his readers to visualize in their heads.

Don't forget to read for 20 minutes/20 days.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  We will finish up Unit 2 with an assessment on Thursday. A study guide went home today. Please review it with your child. It is due on Wednesday.

SEL Our SEL focus this week was showing compassion.  Students learned that focusing their attention and listening to others help them have compassion for others. 

Social Science We began a unit on inheritance and traits this week. Students were introduced to what wildlife biologists study, and to their role as wildlife biologists. Students will be observing similarities and differences in traits among different organisms.

Spelling New spelling words went home Monday. We will continue to work on the 3 spelling menu activities at school. They are all due on Friday, December 13, the day of the test.

English Language Arts   Students will be writing about a family tradition they celebrate. They will be designing a quilt piece describing their own family tradition.

December Reading Logs went home this week. Don't forget to read for 20 minutes/20 days.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class   Students will explore number line puzzles and visual problem strings of arrays and windows.

SEL Our SEL focus this week was on accepting differences. Students learned that: having empathy helps them understand and accept how others are different, and accepting and appreciating people's differences is respectful.

Social Science We will begin a unit on inheritance and traits the week of Dec. 2.W

Spelling New spelling sorts will go home the week of December 2.

English Language Arts  Students are practicing their fluency in Reader's theater as they read myths. Next week, students will be performing their myth. The following week, we will begin a new unit on Cultures and Traditions. Students will be answering the question:  How does learning about other cultures impact our thinking? We will be reading the book Hello. This book identifies different languages and ways to say hello. We will also read The Keeping Quilt. This is a story about the importance of keeping family history and traditions through time. We will be designing a quilt describing our own family tradition. Students should be thinking about a family tradition they celebrate and be able to elaborate on it. 

November Reading Logs are due on or before December 2.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class   We began Unit 2, An Introduction to Multiplication. Students will be working with the addition strategies of repeated addition and skip counting, and the multiplication strategies of doubling, doubling and halving. They will learn to multiply with arrays and number lines.

We will also be working to master our multiplication facts.  We will begin with the 0 and 1s.  A practice sheet will go home on Monday, Dec. 2nd,  and a fact quiz will be given on Wednesday, Dec. 4th. It is NOT timed! Students are responsible for mastering the multiplication facts up to 12. The quiz will have about 26 math facts. It's never too early to start practicing. Flash cards are a great resource!

Please help your Panthers notice things they are grateful for (even the littlest things count!) Have them share it on the calendar or share it with you and you can initial the calendar space.

Panthers who practice Gratitude 18 days between today and November 25th will join us for a Giving Thanks Celebration during school on November 26th.

SEL Our SEL focus this week was on conflicting feelings. Students learned that: they can have conflicting feelings about one situation, and having empathy helps them notice when others have the same feelings they do.
Spelling  New spelling words went home Monday. We will continue to work on the 3 spelling menu activities at school. They are all due on Friday, November 22, the day of the test.

English Language Arts  Don't forget to help your child disguise their turkey. It is due on Tuesday. In class on Tuesday, we will complete a persuasive writing piece. Students will write a letter to a farmer explaining two reasons he should ship the turkey they disguised off his farm. They do not want to be eaten on Thanksgiving. Students will also be practicing their fluency in Reader's theater as they read myths.

Please keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days) and record it on the November log.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  Students will practice rounding, subtraction and addition. The Unit 3 Assessment is scheduled for Nov. 20. A study guide went home today. Please review it with your child to prepare for the assessment. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home too.

Social Science  - In our of Veteran's Day - 3rd grade students are being asked to wear red on Monday for our assembly. We will also be making cards for our veteran. Thank you for all you do VETERANS!

Spelling  New spelling words will go home Monday. We will continue to work on the 3 spelling menu activities at school.

English Language Arts  If your child did not finish their rough draft of the haunted house essay, it is due on Monday. Please check Google Classroom for directions for the closing argument. Students need to finish typing their paper this weekend. It is due on Monday. Next week, we are editing the final draft.

Social Science  We will take an assessment on Downers Grove on Friday, November 8. A study guide went home on Tuesday.  Please make sure your child reviews the study guide and learning log. They can also review using Quizlet. Sign into Google Classroom and find our class "Calski".  We have our field trip scheduled for November 14th. 

Spelling  New spelling words went home on Monday. We will continue to work on the 3 spelling menu activities at school. They will be due on Friday, November 8, the day of the test.

English Language Arts  Students are writing their argumentative piece in which they are persuading their audience to buy their haunted house.

Please keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days) and record it on the October log. It is due on or before November 5. The November log went home today too.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  Our focus will continue to be on three-digit subtraction strategies and expanded form. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home too.

During our SEL lesson this week, students learned they have empathy for others when they feel or understand what they feel. They also learned that noticing and understanding others' perspectives helps them  have empathy. Please point out to them at home when you notice them showing empathy.

During our SEL lesson this week, students learned about others feelings. They learned that they can focus on another person's face and body, and on the situation for clues about how that person is feeling.


Halloween Costumes:  On Halloween Day, please send your child's costume in a bag, clearly marked with their name. No weapons are allowed. Make sure it is easy to get on and off. Students will be changing in the classroom (boys in one room, girls in another). If you have any question, please email me.

Conferences for home room students’ parents will be held this coming

Social Science  In our Downers Grove unit, we will be learning about the  Chief Waubonsee.

Spelling  New spelling words went home on Tuesday. Students are being asked to choose 3 activities, one from each column, on the Spelling Homework Menu. This will help them master their spelling words. If students are using their time wisely during centers, they should have plenty of time to complete this in school. Please work with your child and give them a practice test this week to prepare for the test on Friday, October 25.

English Language Arts   We will begin the argumentative writing unit. Our activities will focus on descriptive writing.

Please keep track of your child’s reading (20 minutes, 20 days) and record it on the October log. It is due on or before November 5.

Mrs. Caliendo's Math Class  We began the unit on Multi-digit Addition and Subtraction. Students are being introduced to the concepts of rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers to nearest ten and the nearest hundred. They will develop new strategies and adjust some of the strategies they learned to solve 3 digit story problems. 

We will have a checkpoint quiz on Wednesday that will focus on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 and solving multi-digit addition story problems. Please review rounding with your child this weekend. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home too.
