April 24, 2015


Reading Students will be reading Owl Moon, a realistic story. They will use literacy skills with attention to figurative language and vocabulary to understand the central message of the story. They will also be reading Owls, a nonfiction passage. They will compare and contrast the two selections.


Reading Logs Continue to read for 20 minutes each night and record your books in the April Log. Reading Logs are due next Friday, May 1st.

Language Arts    

Spelling An assessment was given today. New word sorts will go home on Monday. Students should be completing a spelling activity each night (M-Th).

Math  We began Topic 16, Time, Graphs, and Data. Students are learning to tell time. Please practice telling time to the nearest minute with your child this weekend. Next week we will make and use pictographs and bar graphs to solve problems. An assessment will be given on Wednesday. 

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

Science We are beginning a unit on nutrition. Students will meet the Royal Food Family and learn that in order to grow up healthy, they need food from the Five Food Groups and physical activity.

THANK YOU to the PTO for donating the book How to Help the Earth-by the Lorax to our classroom library. Also thank you to for purchasing totes for all of the students. It is a great way to begin saving the earth!

Reading  and Science Students were busy this week writing and editing their research reports on habitats. Next week they will finish their final copy and add text features of their choice to their reports.

Our caterpillars have really grown this week. They have formed their chrysalises.

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22.  We encourage everyone to participate in Ide's Waste-free Lunch Challenge the week of April 20.  To reduce our impact on landfills, challenge yourself to pack a snack and lunch where nothing needs to get thrown away!

Reading  and Science Students began their shared research project on habitats. They are becoming familiar with text features, and learning to navigate and locate information within text. They researched and took notes on two habitats. Next week they will begin writing their rough drafts which will include an introduction, the body, a conclusion and text features of their choice.

Our caterpillars arrived on Wednesday. We are anxiously watching and journaling about their day to day growth.

We had our March READING CELEBRATION on Thursday. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video, In the Rainforest, and popsicles. Students were also given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This was the last one for the year. Way to go readers!

Math  We will continue Topic 15, Measuring Length. Students will estimate and measure the lengths and heights of objects using different units, use addition and subtraction to solve measurement problems, measure to compare lengths of objects, and use objects to measure items that are not straight. An assessment on Topic 15 will be given at the end of the week.
