Reading Next week we will be reading The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Students will focus on the concept of point of view.


Reading Logs  May logs are due Monday, June 1st. 

Language Arts    

Spelling There will be an assessment given on Friday. Students should complete a different activity each night (M-TH). Please encourage your child to practice their words!

Math  Next week students will review time. Our focus will be on quarter to, quarter past and elapsed time.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

Science Next week in our nutrition unit, we will take a closer look at the the Fruit and Grain food groups. Students will identify foods that belong to each of these groups. We will discuss the health benefits of eating food from these groups.

Reading Next week we will be reading The Three Little Pigs by Paul Galdone, and The Three Little Javalinas by Susan Lowell. Students will retell the stories, and compare the points of view of different characters in the stories.


Reading Logs  Continue to read for 20 minutes each night and record books read in the May log. May logs are due Monday, June 1st. 

Language Arts    

Spelling There was an assessment given today.  New word sorts will go home on Tuesday. This will be the last sort for the year. YAY! Students should complete a different activity each night (M-TH). Please encourage your child to practice their words!

Math  We are working through the topic:  Step Up to 3rd Grade. Next week students will learn how to recognize a polygon and describe it by its number of sides, and solve addition and subtraction problems that use geometry and measurement.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

Reading/Language Arts Next week we will read aloud Toney Baloney Pen Pal by Pam Munoz and Edwin Fotherwingham. Students will learn about the 5 parts of a friendly letter. Mrs. Mandru's class at Prairieview wrote us letters telling us all about 3rd grade. We will be writing a letter back to our new 3rd grade pen pals.

Math  We are working through the topic:  Step Up to 3rd Grade. Today we learned how to name and write fractions. Next week we will learn how to identify and name other fractions, identify fractions of a set of objects, and color to show fractions that name parts of a set.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  THANK YOU Ms. Gogol, Mrs. Kobylarczyk, Mrs. Metherd and Mrs. Scatena for chaperoning our field trip to Brookfield Zoo. We attended the Animal Bites class where we looked at an animal's teeth and learned how to identify whether they were carnivores, omnivores or herbivores.

Reading To get ready for Aaron Renold's visit, students will be reading his book Carnivores. They will ask and answer the 5 W's and write a summary using the information they gathered. Students will also listen to Stray by Cynthia Rylant. They will be introduced to debating by deciding if the character Doris is strong or weak by listing reasons to support their opinion.

Math  We began a new topic:  Step Up to 3rd Grade. The lessons in this topic will help prepare students for 3rd grade. Today we drew pictures and wrote multiplication stories. Next week we will preview division and relate multiplication and division.

Don't forget:  Our field trip to Brookfield Zoo is Wednesday. Please pack a sack lunch with a drink. Make sure you dress your child for the weather (gym shoes, jacket) and apply sunscreen before they come to school. Buses will be leaving by 9:15, so please make sure your child is on time.

Reading Students will be reading Two Ants, a fiction tale of two ants who decide to leave the safety of the others to venture into a kitchen. They will use the words and the pictures in the story to identify the settings of the story and then determine the theme. They will also be reading Ants, a nonfiction passage. Students will use the visualization strategy to illustrate a scene. They will compare and contrast the two selections.


Reading Logs  May reading logs went home today. Continue to read for 20 minutes each night and record books read in the May Log. 

We had our April READING CELEBRATION today. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video, about butterflies, and freeze pops.  Way to go readers!

Language Arts    

Spelling New word sorts went home on Monday. Students should be completing a spelling activity each night (M-Th). An assessment will be given on Friday.

Math  We began a new topic:  Working With Equal Groups. Students will model repeated addition to write number sentences, build arrays to model repeated addition situations, and use repeated addition to solve problems.

Science Our butterflies are here! All ten caterpillars came out of their chrysalises over the weekend. We let them go today since the weather was warm.

We wrapped up our owl unit by dissecting an owl pellet. Ask you child all about it.
