March 27, 2015


Reading  and Science We will continue studying habitats. Our focus will be on the characteristics of the rainforest. Students will also begin a shared research project. They will become familiar with text features, learn to navigate and locate information within text so that they can begin their shared research and writing project. They will be researching and comparing two habitats.


Reading Logs Don't forget to log your minutes! March reading logs are due Wednesday, April 8. 

Language Arts    

Spelling An assessment was given today. New word sorts will go home on Wednesday when we return. 

Math  We will continue Topic 15, Measuring Length. Students will learn to measure the length of an object using, centimeters, feet, and yards. 

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

March 20, 2015


Reading  and Science We will begin studying habitats. Students will be able to answer the question "What is a habitat?" We will be learning about the desert and the ocean. Students will be able to use various text features to locate key facts in a text and answer the 5 Ws to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

Language Arts 

Grammar  Lessons will focus on the articles: a, an, the.

Spelling Students should be practicing their words by completing an activity every night. An assessment will be given on Friday.

Math  An assessment on Topic 14, Money, will be given on Monday. Our next topic is Measuring Length. Students will learn to measure the length of an object using non-standard units and inches. 

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

March 13. 2015


Reading  We will be doing a close read on the story The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater. It is about a man whose house is splashed with bright orange paint. He decides a mulit-colored house would be a nice change. We will focus on differences in the points of view of the characters.

Grammar  Lessons will focus on simple and complex sentences.

Spelling An assessment was given today. New word sorts will be sent home on Monday.

Math  We took an assessment on Topic 13, Counting Money. We will begin Topic 14, Money. Students will learn to add and subtract money, and estimate sums and differences using money amounts. Please take time to practice counting money with your child. 

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily.

Social Studies  Students will be sharing their digital slide presentations about their country. We will also begin learning about famous women in America. The first is Susan LaBella, the first American woman doctor.

Reading  The students will finish their digital slide presentation on their country by adding maps and pictures. Also, next week we will be reading City Green, by DyAnne DiSalvo Ryan. It is a story about citizens working together to improve their neighborhood. Students will be able to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text as well as tell important details about how a story begins and ends. By the end of the week students will be writing a narrative about a time that something happened in their neighborhood.


Reading Logs March Reading logs went home this week. Don't forget to log your minutes! If your child has been reading for 21 days each month, they will be eligible for a free ticket to the Kane County Cougars baseball game. A letter will be going home next week.

We had our February READING CELEBRATION on Tuesday. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video and freeze pops. Students were also given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Way to go readers!


Language Arts

Math  We began Topic 13, Counting Money. Students are learning the value of different coins, how to count a collection of coins, the value of a dollar and make combinations of coins equal to a dollar.

Karol

Star Student of the Week Karol was our star student of the week. When he is at school he likes math and reading. When he is at home he likes to play video games. Karol is a star because he is cool. When he grows up he would like to be a soccer player. Thanks for sharing Karol!
