Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
February 22, 2019

ELA  Students will be typing their reports. We will also be learning about text
features by looking at non-fiction texts.

Don't forget to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and log it. February Logs are due on or before March 4.

SPELLING  Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Thursday, February 28, which is the day of the test.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will finish our unit on Balancing Forces.  Students will write a scientific explanation on why the train changes from falling to floating.

Social Studies: Mr Blocker will be back for our third Jr. Achievement session. He will teach students about being Entrepreneurs and they will create restaurants.


MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: students will play a game to help them practice solving multiplication and division problems,  take a multiplication and division checkpoint quiz on Tuesday, and work with sharing and grouping to solve division story problems.  

We have been writing multiplication and division story problems in class. Please work with them at home. They will be given one multiplication equation and one division equation, and they have to write a story problem for each on the quiz.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 11s. This quiz will be on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

ELA  Continuing with our culture unit, our Culture Day research will be starting next week.

Don't forget to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and log it.

SPELLING  New spelling sorts will go home on Tuesday. Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Friday, March 1, which is the day of the test.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces.  Students will focus on why does the train change from floating to falling?


MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class: I enjoyed meeting many of you this week. Thank you for taking the time to discuss your child's progress with me.  As we continue Unit 5, Multiplication, Division & Area, students will solve and create multiplication and division story problems, and explore fact families.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 9s. This quiz will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2019.

ELA  As we continue with our culture unit, I will introduce the students to the research paper they will be writing.  It would be great if you could have a conversation with your child over the weekend about countries your family/ancestors immigrated to America from.

There will be a Chapter test over all 4 lessons on Wednesday, Feb. 13. It will NOT be open book. Students should study their Lesson Reviews, Open Book Quizzes and the study guide.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces.  We will finish Chapter 4:  Why does the train float, even though gravity is acting on it? students will read the text Explaining a Bridge, which provides another context for applying ideas about balanced forces. They will also create physical models and discuss why the train floats. 

Social Studies:  Mr. Blocker, our Junior Achievement volunteer will be back. 
In session two, students examine the importance of money to a city.

We are making an immigration scrapbook. We will be writing a response to a scenario as if we were an immigrant.

Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News

ELA  We’ll continue learning about immigration and culture. We will read Lesson 4: Life in America. There will be a short open book quiz on Thursday. There will be a Chapter test over all 4 lessons. It will NOT be open book. Students should study their Lesson Reviews, Open Book Quizzes and the study guide which we will fill out in class. I will have a better idea when the test will be after this week.

February Reading Logs went home today. Make sure to read for 20days/20 minutes per night.

SOCIAL SCIENCE  Science: We will continue our unit on Balancing Forces. In Chapter 4:  Why does the train float, even though gravity is acting on it? students will examine how 2 forces can be exerted on an object a the same time.

Social Studies:  We are fortunate to have Mr. Blocker as our Junior Achievement volunteer. He will be in our classroom once a week, for five weeks, for 50 minutes. He will be discussing the characteristics of cities and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. In our first session students will identify the different zones used in city planning and apply the information to organize businesses. 


MATH  Ms. Zurales' Math class is working in Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions. Our focus will be on fractions this week. Students will compare and order fractions. The study guide went home today and is due on Thursday, Feb. 7. The Unit 4 test is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8.

Our next Multiplication facts will be the 7s. This quiz will be on Thursday.
