Reading and Language Arts   Next week we will be reading a humorous fictional story called Officer Buckle and Gloria. It is about a policeman who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody ever listens-until he brings a dog named Gloria. We'll also talk about Officer Buckle's safety tips.

Comprehension Strategies: Monitor/Clarify; Drawing Conclusions
Vocabulary Words: commands, whistle, audience, award, officer, accident, attention, safety
High Frequency Words: board, listen, told
Grammar Skills:  Pronouns 
Phonics:  r-Controlled Vowels, ar, or, ore

Reading Logs   Please continue to log minutes with your child for January. January Logs are due, FRIDAY, FEB 1ST! Don't forget to log your child's reading in the Six Flags Read to Succeed log too! To participate, your child needs to read for a total of 6 hours or 360 minutes. This log must be returned to school by February 22, 2013 in order to receive a free ticket to Six Flags theme park. 

Math  We began Ch. 13, TimeStudents will explore minutes and hours, tell time to the quarter hour, tell and show time to 5 minutes, tell time before the hour and describe times of events as A.M. or P.M. 

Flash Cards  Students should be working hard to memorize their addition and subtraction facts.  

Science  We had a visitor, Mr. Luby, from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. He talked to the students about owls. We learned about what they look like, how they live, what they eat and where they live. Mr. Luby brought a real Screech Owl and a Great Horned Owl for us to see! In our classroom we also got to dissect an owl pellet. Ask your child about it! Next week, we will continue with the unit on Living Things. We will be talking about plants.

Star Student of the Week  Calder was our star student of the week.   When he is at school he enjoys gym. When he is at home he likes to watch TV and build with Legos. When Calder grows up he would like to be an inventor.  He is a star because he works hard, is funny and he can build cool stuff. Thanks for sharing Calder!

Reading and Language Arts   Next week we will be reading two stories. The first one is called Grandpa's Corner Store. It is a story about a little girl who is a big help to her grandfather. The second story is BARRIO Jose's Neighborhood. We will be taking a walk through a boy's busy neighborhood. 

Comprehension Strategies: Summarize; Making Judgements; Topic, main idea, details
Vocabulary Words: deliveries, flyer, grocery store, grand opening, success, supermarket, harvest, customs, traditions, fiesta
Grammar Skills:  Nouns: proper and plural

Our field trip to the fire station was a blast! The children not only went on a tour of the fire house, but they got to see an ambulance leave on a call. Ask them all about it.

Math  We will continue Chapter 12, Use MoneyStudents will show one dollar in a variety of ways and make change to $1.00. We will have a test on Chapter 12 on Thursday. Our next Chapter is Time.

Flash Cards  Students should be working hard to memorize their addition and subtraction facts. To check memorization of these facts, we are taking timed tests. Once your child passes a set of facts, they will move to the next level.  Look in your child's planner to find out what facts they should be working on at home. Here is a website you can try:

Science  We will continue with the unit on Living Things. We will start Lesson 3, What Do Plants Need? Students will predict and observe what plants need to grow. We will also be studying owls next week. We will be dissecting an owl pellet. 


Star Student of the Week  Gabby was our star student of the week.   When she is at school she enjoys reading, math and spelling. When she is at home she likes to play Wii and her 3DS with her dad. When Gabby grows up she would like to be a doctor.  She is a star because she is a good kid. Thanks for sharing Gabby!

Reading and Language Arts   Next week we will be reading Jamaica Louise James. It is a story about a girl who loves to draw and paint. To surprise her grandmother on her birthday, she hangs her artwork up at the subway station where her grandmother works.
