December 19, 2014



Reading  When we return in January, we will be reading the story Officer Buckle and Gloria, by Peggy Rathmann. It is a humorous fictional story about a policeman who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody ever listens-until he brings his dog Gloria. Our comprehension strategy will focus on asking and answering questions such as who, what, where, when and why.


Reading Logs  December reading logs are due on Monday, January 5. Please continue to read and help your child record minutes in their reading log. Don't forget to record minutes in your Six Flags Log too. 


Language Arts 

Grammar Lessons will focus on contractions.

Spelling  New spelling words will go home on Monday when we return. Keep them in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used during the first two weeks of January. 

Math  This week we began the topic Subtracting Two-Digit Numbers. We learned how to use connecting cubes, and paper and pencil to regroup and subtract. When we return, the lessons will focus on using workmats, cubes, subtraction frames, paper and pencil, and a number line to subtract two-digit numbers.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily. The Math flash cards that you purchased should be used to practice math facts as well as the one minute math practice worksheets that are brought home. Weekly timed tests are given.

Social Studies The students enjoyed traveling to China, Mexico, Israel, Sweden and Poland to learn about the holidays and traditions that these countries celebrate this time of year.

Science  We will continue learning about Energy and Motion. Students will be able to identify forms and sources of energy, and describe ways energy and matter interact. 

Marcin

Star Student of the Week  Marcin was our star student of the week. When he is at school he enjoys gym, math and computers. When he is at home he likes to play video games. Marcin is a star because he is the best one at football. When he grows up he would like to be a football player. Thanks for sharing Marcin!

Reading and Social Studies  Next week we will learn about how people around the world celebrate the holidays. The students will be "traveling" to China, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Poland and Sweden to learn about the holidays and traditions that these countries celebrate this time of year.

Language Arts 

Grammar We will focus on irregular verbs.

Spelling We will not having spelling next week. New spelling words will go home after the holiday break.

Math  We will wrap up Topic 8, Adding Two-Digit Numbers  with an assessment early in the week. The next topic will focus on subtracting two-digit numbers, using regrouping.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily. Use your flash cards to practice math facts as well as the one minute math practice worksheets that are brought home. Weekly timed tests are given.

Star Student of the Week  Caroline was our star student of the week. When she is at school she enjoys reading and recess. When she is at home she likes to play on her Ipad and color. When she grows up she would like to be a police woman. Caroline is a star because she cares about her friends . Thanks for sharing Caroline!






Ide will be decorating a Mitten Tree for the holidays as part of as our school and community connection. Please bring in new mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves to decorate our tree. Reading We have been working this week with the reading strategy cause and effect. We read passages from the book How To Be A Friend by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown. Students completed a web graphic organizer. Using evidence from the text, they had to provide possible causes of why 2 friends were friends for 3 years. Next week students will write an opinion piece explaining the qualities of a good friend. Students will use evidence from the texts read in our friendship unit.

We had our November READING CELEBRATION on Tuesday. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video and freeze pops. Students were also given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Way to go readers!!

The lessons next week will focus on adding two, 2 digit numbers using paper and pencil, adding on a number line, and adding more than two numbers.

Social Studies 

Junior Achievement  Ms. Constance, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today and taught us about decision making in a community.
She also taught us about how money flows through a community. These were the final sessions in the Jr. Achievement program, Our Community. The students received Certificates of Achievement. This was a wonderful program. Thank you to Ms. Constance for volunteering her time in our class. The students really enjoyed her visits!

Reading Students will be learning about The First Thanksgiving. Activities will focus on the Pilgrims and the Wampanoags.

Grammar We will begin working with possessive nouns.

Spelling There will be no spelling next week. New word sorts will go home the week of December 1st.

Math  We will have an assessment on Topic 7, using mental math to find differences next week. The next topic we will focus on is adding 2 digit numbers. Students will learn how to regroup.

Social Studies 

Junior Achievement  Ms. Constance, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today and taught us about the economic role of government in a community. Students discussed government jobs in the community and why taxation is necessary.

Star Student of the Week  Ryan was our star student of the week. When he is at school he enjoys math.  When he is at home he likes to play soccer. When he grows up he would like to be a chef. Ryan is a star because he is 7 years old. Thanks for sharing Ryan!

Reading  Students were busy this week researching hippos or tortoises. They gathered information and completed a rough draft of their report. Next week they will finish writing their final copy. We will also read Tarra and Bella by Carol Buckly. It is about an elephant and dog who become best friends. Students will compare and contrast Tarra and Bella and Owen and Mzee.

Language Arts 

Grammar We will continue working with pronouns.

Spelling Students will continue their word study with the words they brought home this past Monday. The focus will be on vocabulary activities.  Make sure to keep the words in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used next week. An assessment will be given on Friday.

Math  We had an assessment on Topic 6, finding sums using mental math on Thursday. We have begun the next topic, using mental math to subtract. The lessons next week will focus on subtracting multiples of 10 from 2-digit numbers using mental math, finding the missing part of 100 by counting up from the given part, and using a hundreds chart to find the difference between 2-digit numbers less than 100.

Social Studies 

Junior Achievement  Ms. Constance, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today to teach us about unit and assembly production. We compared unit and assembly-line production methods by making "donuts". Ask your child all about it. Next time we will learn about the economic role of government in a community.

Reading  After reading all about  Owen & Mzee, a hippo and a tortoise who became friends, students will choose one topic: hippos or tortoises to research. After completing a graphic organizer they will use the facts they gathered to write a report.

Social Studies  We are learning about our state.

Junior Achievement  Ms. Constance, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today to teach us about Our Community.  This is a five week program. Today we learned how a community works. We identified businesses and related jobs in a community. We discussed the terms volunteer, business and citizen and how they are important to our community.

Reading  We will continue to work with the text Owen & Mzee. Students will look at text features and record them in their booklets. They will complete  a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast Owen and Mzee. We will discuss the author's purpose for writing this text and how it relates to the essential question, "How can stories help us learn life lessons?"

Reading  We will continue reading  Owen & Mzee: The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship by Isabella Hatkoff. Students will continue being critical readers, looking at the information to determine why the author wrote this book. Students are answering questions related to the text, using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, and identifying text features used in this nonfiction text.  We are in full swing with Daily 5. Students learned how to be good reading coaches this week. Ask them about it.

Language Arts 

Grammar Our focus will be on collective nouns.

Spelling  Students will continue their word study with the words they brought home this past Monday. The focus will be on vocabulary activities.  Make sure to keep the words in the ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used next week. An assessment will be given on Friday.

Math  We've started the topic Place Value to 100. The lessons next week will focus on identifying and writing numbers that are 10 more or 10 less than given numbers, identify even and odd numbers, and problem solving using data from a chart. An assessment will be given by Friday.

Halloween Costumes 

We ask that students bring their costumes to school with them in their backpacks or in a clearly marked bag.  Costumes should fit over their clothes so they can put them on easily.  NO toy weapons or weapon look alikes are allowed at school.  Also, no edible treats can be sent in that day due to allergies.  The room moms will provide treats for the classrooms that have been teacher approved.
