December 5, 2014

Reading We have been working this week with the reading strategy cause and effect. We read passages from the book How To Be A Friend by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown. Students completed a web graphic organizer. Using evidence from the text, they had to provide possible causes of why 2 friends were friends for 3 years. Next week students will write an opinion piece explaining the qualities of a good friend. Students will use evidence from the texts read in our friendship unit.

Reading Logs December reading logs went home on Monday. Please continue to read and help your child record minutes in their reading folder.  Don't forget to record minutes in your Six Flags log too!

We had our November READING CELEBRATION on Tuesday. We celebrated with lunch in the classroom, a Magic School Bus Video and freeze pops. Students were also given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Way to go readers!!

Language Arts

Grammar Our focus this week has been on verbs: action, linking and helping. We will continue next week discussing verb tenses.

Spelling New spelling words went home on Monday. Keep them in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used next week.

Math  We begain Topic 8, Adding Two-Digit Numbers. We are learning how to use models to add a 2 digit number to 1 digit number and regroup using paper and pencil. The lessons next week will focus on adding two, 2 digit numbers using paper and pencil, adding on a number line, and adding more than two numbers.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily. Use your flash cards to practice math facts as well as the one minute math practice worksheets that are brought home. Weekly timed tests are given.

Junior Achievement  Ms. Constance, a volunteer from Junior Achievement, came to our class today and taught us about decision making in a community.
She also taught us about how money flows through a community. These were the final sessions in the Jr. Achievement program, Our Community. The students received Certificates of Achievement. This was a wonderful program. Thank you to Ms. Constance for volunteering her time in our class. The students really enjoyed her visits!
