January 16, 2015

Reading  We will be reading a nonfiction story called Aero and Mike, by Joan Plummer Russell.  It is a story about a partnership between a policeman, Officer Mike, and his partner, a police dog named Aero. The reading strategy will focus on author's purpose.

Reading Logs Please continue to read and help your child record minutes in their reading log. Don't forget to record minutes in your Six Flags Log too.

Language Arts

Grammar  Lesson will focus on using prefixes and suffixes.

Spelling   A spelling assessment was given today. New spelling words will go home on Tuesday. Please keep them in the Ziploc bag and in a safe place so they can be used throughout the next two week.

Math  An assessment on Topic 9 was given on Thursday. We began Topic 10, Place Value to 1,000. Next week students will count by hundreds to 1,000, use place value models to show numbers to 1,000, and will add and subtract multiples of 10 or 100 to and from a three digit number without regrouping.

Math Facts Math facts should be reviewed daily. The Math flash cards that you purchased should be used to practice math facts as well as the one minute math practice worksheets that are brought home. Weekly timed tests are given.

Science  Students were given a toy car, clay, tooth picks and paper and asked to build a sail. They tested their models and observed what made the car move. Students concluded that energy from wind moved the car. Next week we will look at how energy can move and change things in the classroom.

Social Studies  This week we read about Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream and how he helped mold a brighter present day. Students were asked what their dreams were for their community, their country and the world. They shared these dreams in a project that is displayed in the classroom.

Star Student of the Week Emilija was our star student of the week. When she is at school she enjoys recess, math, art, music and reading. When she is at home she like to play with her dolls and her kitten. Emilija is a star because she likes to sing and dance. When she grows up she would like to be a singer. Thanks for sharing Emilija!
