Ms. Zurales' 3rd Grade News
January 19, 2018

ELA  Continuing with our culture unit, our Culture Day research will be starting next week. Please help your child pick a culture they can research, write about, and present.  It should be a culture that represents your family!  There will be more information coming as the dates for presentations get closer.

January reading logs went home on Monday. Make sure to read for 2o min/20 days during the month. They are due on Feb 1.

SPELLING  New sorts go home Monday .Three items on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on or before Friday, Feb 2, the day of the test.  If students are using their time wisely, they will be able to complete all 3 activities during centers.

Congratulations and good luck to Robbie and Isabella who will both represent our class in the grade level spelling bee on Wednesday. I am very proud of all my spellers!

SOCIAL SCIENCE Social Studies:  We’ll continue learning about immigration and culture. We will read A New Life in America. There will be an open book quiz on Lesson 4 this week. There will be a Chapter test over all 4 lessons. It will NOT be open book. Students should study their Lesson Reviews, Open Book Quizzes and the study guide which we will fill out in class. I will have a better idea when the test will be after this week.

MATH  Ms. Zurales' math class:  We will begin Unit 5: Multiplication, Division & Area next week. Our next Multiplication fact quiz on the 5's will be given on Wednesday.

If your child should forget their Student Book or their Home Connections workbook at school, they can go into my google math classroom from a home computer and print the page they will need to complete for homework.

Important Dates & Announcements

We have made the decision as a 3rd grade team not to generally administer the Winter MAP test to our students.  At this time, we felt that the time away from instruction to take this test was not worth the results we would get.  We have not made any decisions about the Spring MAP test.  For Winter data review we continue to use Fountas and Pinnell Reading Leveling (Benchmarking next week) and our Common ELA and Math assessments that the students have taken on line which directly assess the standards we are teaching in our curriculum.  If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to your homeroom teacher.

Thanks!
